Understanding the Rural Non-Farm Economy
Pakistan's growing labour force needs a reliable source of jobs. Because agriculture is not thought to provide enough new jobs, most point to urban job creation as the future of employment. But that leaves out another important sector: the rural non-farm economy, of which little is known to policymakers. A recently completed International Growth Centre project to digitise data on small and cottage industries in rural Punjab makes an impotant contribution to filling this knowledge gap. It provides the first-ever dataset on small business activity in rural Punjab broken down by region, type of activity, and intensity.
