He is an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at LUMS since September 2006. Farooq Naseer’s research interests lie in the field of development economics and political economy including microeconometric analysis of institutions and their role in the face of information problems. His dissertation work has looked at the community-based organisations in the Philippines as well as the pricing structure in the sugarcane markets in Pakistan.
Farooq Naseer received his MA and PhD in Economics from Yale University.

As Pakistan embarks on a campaign to curb Hawala and Hundi networks, this article suggests that policymakers would do well to consider the forces that cause such networks to exist in the first place, and the positive externalities they create.
